Drawn to the philosophy of The Botanist Gin, this community of like-minded souls are connected by a passion to explore their native landscapes and discover all that nature has to offer.

One of the films in the series follows the story of South African foraging expert and founder of Veld and Sea, Roushanna Gray. Situated at the Good Hope Gardens Nursery in the Cape Peninsula, Roushanna teaches foraging and wild cookery classes. She educates people about indigenous edible foods through immersive experiences, connection and creativity.

“My wish is that after watching this film, viewers become curious as to what their local wild ingredients are, wherever they are in the world, and are hopefully inspired enough to go out and learn about the delicious edible landscape. There is so much to explore.”

Roushanna has been experimenting with the exciting flavours and diversity of fynbos and indigenous plants for over ten years. The wide range of delicious and nutritious culinary offerings, from the beautiful inter-tidal rock pools along South Africa’s coastline, also play a major role in her cooking classes and workshops.

In her film, Roushanna explains that she is inspired by the outstanding natural beauty of the fynbos in Cape Point, a tiny strip at the bottom of South Africa with the highest density of species in all of the different floral kingdoms.

Her exploration into the flavours and medicinal properties of foraged plants was inspired by her husband, who is an indigenous plant specialist, as well as her horticulturalist mother-in-law. “With foraging, it’s the only way you can learn. You can’t Google it, it doesn’t work like that. The only way is to go out there and experience the plants, smell the scents, make the recipes and make those flops!” said Roushanna.

The Botanist Gin Brand Ambassador, Caitlin Hill, fell in love with the concept of foraging from the first time she visited Veld and Sea and met Roushanna. “The Wild mini film series gives people an incredible insight into the world of foraging – it is such an honour for Roushanna to be representing South Africa as a part of this global community, “said Caitlin.
