Supporting Our Nurses: A Commitment to Their Well-being and Future

On International Nurses Day, Life Healthcare CEO Peter Wharton-Hood has reasserted a crucial commitment: supporting the invaluable nursing workforce that is essential to the resilience of healthcare systems worldwide. In light of current global challenges such as mental and physical health pressures, the importance of caring for our nurses is increasingly recognized as fundamental to a robust healthcare system.

This year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” underscores how a healthy, supported nursing workforce is vital to the sustainability of healthcare.

“Nurses who feel respected, recognized, and empowered are more capable of delivering high-quality care,” states Wharton-Hood. “Prioritizing their well-being not only enhances their resilience but also significantly improves patient outcomes.”

Nurses constitute approximately 80% of Life Healthcare’s workforce. Wharton-Hood emphasizes that when employees are valued and supported, they foster a positive environment for both staff and patients.

The 2025 International Nurses Day Report by the International Council of Nurses highlights significant challenges that nurses face globally, such as chronic understaffing and overwhelming workloads, contributing to burnout and stressing the healthcare system’s sustainability.

Life Healthcare Chief Nurse Officer Merle Victor highlights the significance of mental health support for nurses, especially given the personal and professional stressors they face. Life Healthcare’s Employee Wellness Programme offers free counseling and resources to navigate these challenges, ensuring a resilient workforce.

“Investing in our nurses’ well-being not only benefits the nurses personally but also enhances their engagement with patients, colleagues, and families. A supported nurse is a more effective, compassionate caregiver,” affirms Victor.

Life Healthcare is dedicated to recognizing the contributions of nurses and fostering a positive workplace culture through initiatives such as Monthly Nurse of the Month Awards, Long-service Awards, and The Great 100 Nurses Programme.

The organization is also committed to ongoing professional development, ensuring growth and career advancement opportunities for nurses within the organization.

On this International Nurses Day, Life Healthcare reiterates its pledge to prioritize the health, well-being, and recognition of nurses, believing that investing in them today will ensure a healthier, more resilient future for our communities.
