From the Desk of Bianca Emmerick: Discovering the Timeless Charm of Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton

There are a few places in Johannesburg that can transport you quite like the Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was immediately taken by that rare combination of charm and sophistication. Not only does this hotel offer a perfect balance of history and modern luxury, but it also stands as a true Joburg treasure.

A Sanctuary in the Heart of Sandton

Nestled in the heart of Sandton, just a short stroll from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as well as the bustle of Sandton City, the Balalaika feels like a world away. It’s tranquil, lush, and brimming with character. What’s more, it manages to blend the serenity of a countryside retreat with the energy and convenience of a city hotel.

A Place with a Past: The Birth of an Icon

The Balalaika’s story is one worth telling — and retelling. Long before Sandton became South Africa’s economic powerhouse, this area was a simple “outspan stop” on the old wagon road between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In those days, travellers would rest their oxen here, sip tea, and continue on their way.

It was in this pastoral setting that, in 1948, a British Royal Marine Officer named Gerard Le Grand stumbled upon the old Good Hope Tea Garden. Along with his wife, he transformed it into a welcoming tearoom, as well as adding a few quaint rondavels for weary visitors.

Back then, there was no Sandton, no Rosebank — just rolling countryside. Even so, the Balalaika quickly became a favourite day trip destination for city dwellers seeking a taste of country calm.

By the 1950s, it had evolved into a dinner-and-dance spot, alive with music and laughter. In 1959, it officially became a hotel — and the only one in an area that “reeked more of manure than mink,” as the saying went. The Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton has witnessed Sandton’s transformation from a rural area to a financial hub, all while preserving its signature warmth and heritage.

Why “Balalaika”?

There are two theories behind the origin of the name. The first is that it was inspired by the balalaika, an Eastern European string instrument known for its distinctive triangular body and gentle tone. The second — and my personal favourite — is that it was named after the 1939 film “Balalaika”, a Parisian love story set to music and candlelight.

Either way, it’s a fitting name. There’s a certain rhythm to this place — a musicality that hums softly in every corner, from the piano in the lounge to the clinking of glasses at the bar. Even more interesting, the daughter of the original founder, Virginia Brock, kept the lyrics from the movie’s theme song — an ode to romance, melody, and nights that linger “’til break of day.”

From Rondavels to Refined Elegance

Fast forward to today, and the hotel has transformed into a world-class establishment that caters effortlessly to both business and leisure travellers. Its 330 rooms are spread across beautifully maintained wings and gardens, creating a space that feels intimate despite its size.

The design pays homage to its English-country roots — think gables, timber beams, and tiled roofs — while integrating modern finishes, plush bedding, and contemporary comforts. My suite was a seamless blend of old-world elegance and new-world convenience: not only a private lounge but also a luxurious spa bath, a granite-topped workspace with high-speed Wi-Fi, and of course, those crisp white sheets that invite you to stay just a little longer.

What surprised me most was how cosy the hotel feels, despite its scale. With multiple restaurants, conference facilities, and hundreds of rooms, one might expect a sense of bustle — yet the Balalaika remains peaceful and personal. Every corner feels curated; every interaction, genuine.

The Staff: The Heart of the Balalaika

If I could bottle the essence of what makes this hotel special, it would be the people. The staff here are exceptional — polished, professional, yet warm and utterly human. Not only do they greet you by name, but they also anticipate your needs and seem to know the answer to everything. I joked that you could call them “Dr. Google” — that’s how knowledgeable they are.

From the concierge who shared snippets of the hotel’s history, to the restaurant team who remembered my coffee order from the first morning — every encounter left me smiling. It’s rare to find a service that feels both five-star and familiar. The Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton manages that delicate balance beautifully.

The Bull Run: A Johannesburg Institution

And then there’s The Bull Run. Oh, The Bull Run.

This restaurant is not just part of the hotel — it’s an integral part of Joburg’s culinary heritage. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, it remains, in my opinion, one of the top ten restaurants in Johannesburg. Stepping into The Bull Run feels like entering a gentleman’s club of old — leather booths, dark wood, and the comforting hum of conversation.

The menu celebrates South African beef in all its glory. My personal favourite? The Ostrich fillet — tender, flavourful, and cooked to absolute perfection. Every dish that leaves the kitchen is a testament to skill and passion. Even if you’re not a meat lover, their vegetarian options are creative and satisfying.

The restaurant’s name, of course, pays homage to its neighbour — the Johannesburg Stock Exchange — and the “bulls” who keep it bustling. Rather than just a clever play on words, The Bull Run is about more than steak; it’s about atmosphere, tradition, and that unmistakable sense of occasion.

If you visit, make sure to end your meal with a cocktail on the terrace — fairy lights twinkling in the trees, city sounds softened by laughter and music. It’s pure magic.

Business Meets Bliss

What also impressed me is how seamlessly the hotel caters to both business and leisure. Its conference and banqueting facilities are state-of-the-art, yet discreetly tucked away, ensuring that even during busy corporate events, the tranquil atmosphere remains undisturbed.

For families or couples, the two swimming pools, lush gardens, and easy access to Sandton’s top attractions make it an ideal weekend escape. What’s more, for business travellers — like many who frequent the nearby financial district — it’s a sanctuary at the end of a long day.

There’s something deeply comforting about knowing you can attend a meeting in the morning, unwind by the pool in the afternoon, and dine at one of the city’s best restaurants by night — all without leaving the property.

Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton: A Living Legacy

What makes the Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton truly special is that it hasn’t lost sight of its roots. Architect Lance Kinnear once said:

“It’s extremely difficult to replace something that has a long tradition with something else that you hope will develop a tradition.”

~ Lance Kinnear, Architect

The Balalaika never needed to replace its history — instead, it built upon it. From the tea garden of 1948 to the luxury hotel of today, it continues to embody that rare blend of heritage and hospitality, offering “a little bit of country and a lot of history — in the heart of Sandton.”

Final Thoughts On Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton

I’ve stayed in many hotels across Johannesburg, but few have surprised me quite like the Balalaika. It’s that perfect paradox: large yet intimate, elegant yet comfortable, historic yet modern. Whether you’re a local looking for a staycation that feels like a true escape, or an international traveller wanting an authentic taste of South African charm — this is the place for you.

Every visit feels like coming home to a story that’s still being written. As I packed my bags after another memorable stay, I couldn’t help but think — if these walls could talk, they’d probably hum a tune from 1939, softly whispering:

“At the Balalaika, where there is magic in the sparkling wine…”
