The countdown to the National Arts Festival Fringe 2026 has officially begun.
Returning to Makhanda from 25 June to 5 July 2026, the Fringe will showcase more than 200 new works from artists across all nine provinces.
For over four decades, the Fringe has been one of South Africa’s most important creative spaces. It is where artists experiment, challenge convention and bring audiences stories that feel fresh, fearless and deeply relevant.
This year’s programme promises everything from theatre and comedy to live music, dance, film, puppetry and immersive storytelling. Presented in multiple South African languages, the Fringe once again transforms Makhanda into a living cultural laboratory.
A Platform for Bold New Voices
National Arts Festival Executive Producer Zikhona Monaheng says the Fringe remains one of the country’s most exciting spaces for artistic discovery.
Programming balances artistic excellence with diverse voices, audience experience and practical production realities.
The 2026 edition will welcome both legendary returning artists and exciting emerging talent, creating opportunities for collaboration and creative exchange.
Comedy Giants and Collective Creativity Take Centre Stage
Comedy lovers are in for a major treat.
Festival favourites including Loyiso Gola, Stuart Taylor, Conrad Koch, Dalin Oliver, Langa Kulati and Khanyisa Bhunu will headline late-night comedy sessions at the Graham Hotel.
The Festival’s collective hubs are also back for a second year.
Cape Town’s Spark in the Dark and Soweto’s TX Theatre return with curated rosters that showcase some of the country’s most innovative creative voices.
Meanwhile, the Great Hall becomes a dedicated music hub with performances from artists across South Africa, plus high-energy DJ sets stretching late into the night.
