Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa wins four 2026 Haute Grandeur Awards, including Best Bush Lodge and Best Safari Lodge, in South Africa’s Welgevonden Game Reserve

Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa has added four prestigious titles to its growing list of accolades at the 2026 Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Awards. The luxury safari lodge secured the global honours of Best Bush Lodge and Best Safari Lodge, while also being named Best Destination Wedding Hotel in Africa and Best Family Hotel in South Africa.

Set within the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg, the lodge has built its reputation on combining Big Five wildlife encounters with personalised luxury hospitality. The latest recognition reflects guest experiences rather than public voting or a judging panel, making the achievement especially meaningful for the lodge.

A luxury safari shaped by the Waterberg wilderness

Less than three hours from Johannesburg, Mhondoro offers an immersive safari experience where wildlife and luxury exist in equal measure.

Guests can expect:

Expert-guided game drives and walking safaris
The lodge’s signature underground waterhole hide for close wildlife viewing
Seasonal farm-inspired dining
Wellness experiences
Spacious suites and private villa accommodation

The experience is designed to feel intimate rather than exclusive, allowing guests to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the bush at an unhurried pace.

CEO reflects on the award-winning experience

“These awards mean a great deal to us, not only because of the recognition, but because of what they represent,” said Fritz Breytenbach, CEO of Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa.

“The two global titles honour the safari experience at the heart of Mhondoro, and the privilege of sharing this remarkable wilderness with guests in a way that feels close, considered and deeply personal.”

He added that the family and destination wedding awards recognise another important part of the lodge’s identity: creating meaningful moments where families and couples feel completely at ease.

Guest feedback drives the recognition

Unlike many hospitality awards, the Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Awards are determined through verified guest feedback. There is no public voting process or judging panel.

For the Mhondoro team, that makes each title especially significant. The awards reflect not only the lodge’s facilities but also how guests feel during their stay.

A growing legacy of luxury safari excellence

The 2026 honours build on Mhondoro’s previous success with Haute Grandeur and reinforce its commitment to refining every part of the guest journey while preserving the warmth and authenticity that define the lodge.

Located in one of South Africa’s premier Big Five reserves, Mhondoro continues to offer a safari where wildlife comes remarkably close—and where the welcome lingers long after guests return home.

Why Mhondoro earned four Haute Grandeur Awards

Best Bush Lodge and Best Safari Lodge

The two global titles celebrate an experience shaped by the rhythms of the Waterberg. Mornings begin with fresh animal tracks, afternoons bring close wildlife encounters from the underground hide, and evenings end beneath expansive African skies. Throughout every safari, guides combine deep wildlife knowledge with genuine hospitality.

Best Family Hotel in South Africa

The family award highlights Mhondoro’s thoughtful approach to multigenerational travel.

The lodge offers spacious family-friendly accommodation, child-focused bush experiences, private safari options and the exclusive-use Mhondoro Villa. The villa includes its own guide, safari vehicle, chef, butler and dedicated lodge team, giving families and small groups complete flexibility during their stay.

Best Destination Wedding Hotel in Africa

The continental award recognises Mhondoro as a sought-after destination for weddings, elopements and milestone celebrations. Couples can enjoy exclusive-use options, tailored dining experiences and curated safari activities, creating celebrations that feel private, intimate and deeply personal.
