Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup: A Benchmark in Collective Excellence

Each September, the waters off Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda come alive with an exceptional spectacle: the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. More than a regatta, it is a celebration of human achievement, innovation and, most crucially, teamwork. As the event marks its four-decade-long partnership with Rolex, it embodies the power of collective excellence.
The Enduring Legacy of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
This year’s edition takes place from 7–13 September, with five days of high-stakes competition scheduled. True to form, the event typically attracts a fleet of about 50 of the world’s most powerful monohulls, all more than 18.29 metres (60 feet) long.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) launched the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in 1980 and welcomed Rolex as a Title Sponsor five years later.
Notably, this year’s event will also see the prestigious club pay tribute to its founder, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, whose forward-looking vision led to the creation of an institution that has become an international benchmark in yachting.
Enduring Partnerships of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
A high-profile competition like the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup requires exceptional regulatory control. The YCCS, in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA), provides this crucial oversight, supported by the Swiss watchmaker’s critical work as well.
These enduring alliances are a rare phenomenon in modern sport, built on a perpetual pursuit of excellence and a shared commitment to quality and innovation.
Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, a renowned United States yachtsman who took part in the regatta’s first edition, admires how its stature has grown.
‘The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is always the defining moment of the year, where you put all your work on the table. My earliest memories stem from the first-ever event partnered by Rolex, 40 years ago in 1985. As the relationship with the YCCS deepened, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup quickly became a massively important event and was significant in the development of my own career. It was where I built many of the skills and tools of my profession.’

Teamwork and Technology at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
This theme of cooperation is also crucial on the water. Just as the regatta depends on its partners, every successful campaign relies on outstanding teamwork.
Every race on the captivating Maddalena Archipelago poses unique challenges, and in the end, the team achieves victory through resolute trust, clear communication, and a shared purpose.
The event unites some of the best, most innovative yachts in the world with the finest sailors: entries this year include the 31-metre Magic Carpet e, arguably the world’s most advanced Maxi; the 25-metre Capricorno, a no-compromise racing machine; and the 21-metre Scorpione Hormar, representing the latest thinking in nautical café racers.
However, it takes a highly cohesive crew to translate the potential of these complex yachts into performance on the water.
In this way, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup becomes more than just a race. The community shares knowledge throughout the sport, ensuring its continuity and elevating performance levels for everyone involved.
Teamwork and Technology at the Maxi Yacht Race
At its heart, though, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup remains a prime example of what can be achieved when different bodies come together with a shared passion.
For more than 40 years, this tapestry of achievement, spanning the Title Sponsor, the organisers and, indeed, the teams, has been instrumental in building reputations and making legends.
‘The objective has always been to provide competitors at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup with the perfect platform. From my earliest days at the club, I have always admired the way in which the YCCS and our partners Rolex and the IMA have striven to ensure that seamless organization, camaraderie and the pursuit of excellence remain at the core.’
~ Andrea Recordati, Commodore of the YCCS

A Shared Passion at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
Building on this spirit, Cayard offers a poignant message to the crews set to compete this year. As the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup moves into its fifth decade, it remains not only a grand sporting spectacle but a symbol of human cooperation at its finest. Underpinned by some of the strongest collaborations in the sporting world, it is destined to succeed for many years to come.
‘The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is like a book. Each edition represents a new chapter. Solid foundations were laid in the early years, and it is for those competing now to continue writing the story, living up to the legacy.’
~ Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard

About Rolex
Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacturer headquartered in Geneva. The brand is recognised the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige.
The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Perpetual watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability.
The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolised by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria.
The Perpetual Philosophy
The word ‘Perpetual’ is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch, but it is more than just a word on a dial; it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward.
A Legacy of Watchmaking Innovation
This philosophy led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations. These include the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents.
Integrated and Independent Manufacturing
At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from casting gold alloys to the final assembly and finishing. A fifth site is under construction and expected to open in 2029.
Supporting a Better World
Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts and culture, sport and exploration, as well as those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet. For more information, visit the Rolex Yachting News Room on their website.
