Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run to Mark 12 Years Since Madiba’s Passing

Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run to Mark 12 Years Since Madiba’s Passing

The Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run (MRWR) returns on Sunday, 7 December 2025, marking 12 years since Nelson Mandela’s passing. As the anniversary approaches, this event stands as a powerful reminder of his impact.

Hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (SACR), the annual event not only invites South Africans but also encourages the global community to come together.

In doing so, participants have the chance to celebrate Madiba’s enduring legacy while reflecting on the nation’s ongoing journey toward justice and equality.

Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run: Event Details and Entry Information

When it comes to the route, participants will start and finish at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. The programme includes a 5 km fun walk, a 10 km run, and a 21 km run, all setting off at 6:30 am.

Right now, online entries are open at www.mandelawalkandrun.com.

Entry fees range from R100 to R200.

What’s more, proceeds from the event directly support the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s efforts to promote dialogue and community-based development.

Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run: Race Ambassador and Legacy

As a special addition this year, the 2025 event proudly welcomes Blanche Moila as its official Race Ambassador. In fact, Moila is celebrated as a true icon in South African athletics—she became the first black woman to receive Springbok colours in athletics back in 1984.

Furthermore, her trailblazing career, which includes an array of national titles and international recognition, continues to inspire countless generations of athletes across the country.

‘As we gather to walk and run in Madiba’s memory 12 years on, we are reminded that his legacy is not a monument of the past but a living call to action. Each step we take, and every rand we raise, is a commitment to advancing the work he began in building a society founded on dignity, equality, and justice for all.’

~ Dr. Mbongiseni Buthelezi, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Dr Buthelezi’s sentiments underscore the gravity and purpose of the occasion. The Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run is, therefore, much more than a physical challenge; it is a powerful demonstration of solidarity, bringing together diverse communities across the province for a common, meaningful cause.

‘This event continues to unite South Africans through sport, health, and shared purpose — values that Madiba embodied.’

~ MEC Matome Chiloane
