The Klein Karoo is preparing to come alive with music, creativity and cultural excellence as Klein Karoo Klassique 2026 returns to Oudtshoorn from 7 to 9 August

Now in its 17th year, the beloved winter festival once again brings together an inspiring mix of classical music, literature, visual art, food and wine, creating one of South Africa’s most distinctive cultural experiences.

A World-Class Music Programme Takes Centre Stage

At the heart of Klein Karoo Klassique 2026 is an impressive music programme featuring some of the country’s most acclaimed performers and ensembles.

Festival-goers can look forward to three headline evening performances, including appearances by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town Opera and the Stellenbosch University Choir.

A major highlight of the festival is the return of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra to Klassique for the first time in 13 years. Under the direction of renowned conductor Richard Cock, the orchestra joins celebrated pianist François du Toitfor the Klassique Gala Concert on 7 August.

The festival programme has been carefully curated to allow audiences to attend every performance without scheduling clashes, creating a seamless cultural experience across the weekend.

World Premiere Performance Among Festival Highlights

One of the standout moments of Klein Karoo Klassique 2026 will be the world premiere of a new composition by Shane Woodborne during Cellissimo on 9 August.

The performance brings together eight cellists from the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra alongside soprano Siphamandla Moyake in a unique celebration of the cello repertoire.

Other musical highlights include:

  • Postcards, an international chamber music journey spanning continents and genres.
  • Take Four Piano Quartet, a special Women’s Month recital featuring leading South African female musicians.
  • Heimwee, a moving tribute to legendary South African soprano Mimi Coertse.
  • Spanish Songs, featuring acclaimed duo Zanne Stapelberg and James Grace.
  • Unheard (of), a celebration of female composers whose work has historically been overlooked.
  • A special 90th anniversary performance by the Stellenbosch University Choir, marking its first appearance at the festival.
