Investment Dressing Is the New It-Bag

Investment Dressing Is the New It-Bag

Logos are out. Legacy pieces are in.

Once upon a time, status came stamped on your sleeve. The louder the logo, the bigger the brag. But in 2025, that era feels almost quaint. Across South Africa’s fashion capitals, a quieter kind of luxury has taken hold – one that trades instant gratification for enduring worth. The new mood is measured, sophisticated, and, above all, intentional.

According to the 2025 State of the Luxury Market in Africa report, searches for handbags and jewellery have surged by 14.6% and 43.8% year-on-year, while demand for once-go-to entry-level items like shoes and wallets has dipped sharply. In other words, South Africans are still buying luxury, but they’re just doing it with a sharper eye.

“People are chasing longevity,” says Michael Zahariev, co-founder of Luxity, South Africa’s leading pre-owned luxury reseller. “The age of micro-luxury – small, status-led purchases -is giving way to investment dressing, where fashion is as much about strategy as style.”

The brands holding their ground in the resale world are the icons of craftsmanship: Cartier tops the list, retaining 72.6% of its retail value, followed closely by Hermès (67.8%), Chanel (64.4%), Bulgari (64.3%), and Louis Vuitton (64.2%). But there’s a new contender in the quiet-luxury conversation – Givenchy, whose resale value has jumped 7.1 percentage points this year, proving that subtle sophistication pays off.

This new wave of smart luxury has less to do with showing off and more to do with showing up in clothes that hold their value and jewellery that tells a longer story. “The ultimate luxury now,” Zahariev adds, “is knowing every piece in your wardrobe is working as hard as you are.”

From Cape Town’s coastal minimalists to Joburg’s power dressers, South Africa’s style elite are curating wardrobes that whisper, not shout. Wealth doesn’t need a logo; it just needs good taste. Because in 2025, the chicest thing you can wear is discernment.
