Hyundai’s Empowering Heels on Wheels Workshop for Women Drivers

Hyundai Automotive South Africa recently hosted its inspiring initiative, the Heels on Wheels workshop. This dynamic event equips women with essential motoring and technical skills. The initiative removes barriers in automotive care traditionally dominated by men through hands-on experience.

By fostering a supportive environment, the workshop encourages participants to take charge of their vehicle upkeep, promoting independence on the road. Such programmes are vital in addressing the gender gap in automotive knowledge, where many women report feeling less confident handling basic repairs compared to their male counterparts.

Breaking Down Barriers through Heels on Wheels

Hyundai hosted the Heels on Wheels workshop at its Centurion dealership. The event focused on key vehicle maintenance skills, including how to change a tyre safely, perform basic safety checks, and understand dashboard warning lights. Recent studies reveal that formal driving training taught significantly fewer South African drivers how to change a tyre, so a significant majority still lack these critical skills.

This gap highlights a broader issue in motoring education, where practical, life-saving abilities often receive insufficient attention during the learner phase. Participants at the workshop practised these techniques under guidance, gaining the assurance to apply them in real-world scenarios, such as during breakdowns or routine inspections.

Insights from Hyundai’s HR Director

“Too often, women are left feeling vulnerable or uncertain when it comes to car troubles. Through this workshop, we are not only teaching skills, but we are also building confidence and solutions when we encounter unforeseeable mechanical challenges on the road.”

Her words underscore the emotional and practical benefits of the programme, which goes beyond mere instruction to instil a sense of empowerment. Attendees shared how learning these fundamentals transformed their approach to driving, reducing anxiety and enhancing overall safety awareness.

Heels on Wheels Interactive Sessions and Practical Takeaways

Expert Hyundai Automotive South Africa technicians led interactive demonstrations at the event. These demonstrations included engaging sessions on vehicle safety, maintenance basics, and emergency preparedness tips. Hyundai provided participants with complimentary car care kits and step-by-step guidelines for routine checks.

“Heels on Wheels is about more than just changing mindsets. We want women to feel empowered, informed and in control whenever they get behind the wheel.”

The hands-on format allowed women to ask questions freely, experiment with tools, and simulate common roadside issues. This interactive approach not only reinforced learning but also built camaraderie among participants, creating a network of informed drivers who can support one another in the future.

Hyundai’s Commitment to Inclusivity

Hyundai Automotive South Africa places its commitment to innovation and inclusivity at the heart of this initiative. The company hosts Heels on Wheels to advance its vision of empowering every driver, regardless of gender, with the tools and knowledge they need to feel safe.

Looking ahead, Hyundai plans to expand such workshops across more dealerships, potentially incorporating advanced topics like electric vehicle care or digital diagnostics. This ongoing effort reflects the brand’s dedication to community upliftment, ensuring that motoring becomes an inclusive domain where everyone thrives with equal confidence and capability.
