Young ballet dancer shines in Michael Jackson-inspired production

At just 14 years old, Reddam House Bedfordview Grade 8 student Unathi Nkuta has achieved what many aspiring performers dream of: making her professional ballet debut in a principal role.

The talented young dancer recently took centre stage in Michael Jackson Heal the World Ballet at the Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino, delivering a performance that showcased not only technical excellence but also emotional depth and maturity beyond her years.

Produced and choreographed by Angela Revie of Mzansi Ballet, the production follows the journey of a ballerina navigating childhood challenges and discovering strength through adversity, all set to the iconic music of Michael Jackson.

A breakthrough moment in a young ballet career

For Unathi, the opportunity represented far more than a performance credit.

“Honestly, I didn’t understand the weight of it all until we started rehearsing,” she says. “It’s definitely one of the happiest moments of my ballet journey so far.”

The production’s themes of resilience, healing and self-acceptance resonated strongly with the young performer.

“Heal the World is about overcoming challenges, finding strength through difficult experiences and learning to accept yourself. I think that’s a message many people can relate to, and it’s an honour to bring that story to life through dance and the music of Michael Jackson.”

Her role required her to portray a significant chapter in the ballerina’s journey of self-discovery, communicating powerful emotions through movement while maintaining the technical precision demanded by classical ballet.

From childhood lessons to the professional stage

Unathi’s ballet journey began at the age of six. What started as an extracurricular activity quickly evolved into a lifelong passion.

“I’ve been in love with ballet since my first class,” she says.

Now a student at Mzansi Ballet for the past two years, she has dedicated countless hours to refining her technique through intensive training, rehearsals and coaching.

Preparing for a production of this scale required more than mastering choreography.

“Because Heal the World is such an emotionally driven ballet, I had to focus on storytelling as much as the technical side of dancing. Every rehearsal helped me grow as both a dancer and a performer.”

Balancing academics and artistic excellence

Like many young performers, Unathi has had to learn how to balance the demands of professional-level dance with school commitments.

“It’s hard sometimes, but learning time management from primary school has helped me a lot,” she explains. “Some days were very busy, especially when rehearsals, shows and assignments happened at the same time, but I learnt how important it is to stay focused and use my time wisely.”

The discipline required by ballet has also shaped her character beyond the studio.

“Ballet has taught me discipline, resilience and patience. It has shown me that improvement takes time and that mistakes are part of learning. I’ve discovered that I can push through challenges, keep improving and not give up when things get difficult.”

Celebrating arts and culture in education

Unathi credits her family, teachers and the wider Reddam House Bedfordview community for supporting her ambitions.

“Their support has meant everything to me. I am proud to represent my school on stage.”

According to Stephen Hazley, her achievement is a reflection of both exceptional talent and determination.

“It is wonderful to see our students follow their passions and achieve so well at such an early age,” he says. “To perform on a professional stage like this takes a special type of drive and commitment.”

Hazley adds that extracurricular pursuits play a vital role in student development, helping young people discover and nurture their talents beyond the classroom.

Inspiring the next generation through the arts

Looking ahead, Unathi remains committed to both her education and artistic development.

Her long-term vision extends beyond performance, with ambitions to promote ballet and arts education in underserved communities while advocating for greater awareness and inclusion for neurodiverse individuals.

“Through my love for the arts and commitment to community upliftment, I hope to inspire positive change and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”

As one of South Africa’s rising young ballet talents, Unathi Nkuta is already proving that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact on the country’s arts and culture landscape.
