The new Johannesburg to Lusaka route offers five weekly flights from OR Tambo, making travel to Zambia more accessible for business and leisure travellers
FlySafair has expanded its African network with the launch of a new Johannesburg to Lusaka route, introducing five weekly flights between OR Tambo International Airport and Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Zambia’s capital.
The new service operates every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Fares start from R2,800 from Johannesburg and R3,000 from Lusaka, excluding surcharges.
Tickets are available through the FlySafair website and mobile app.
FlySafair expands its African network
According to Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, Lusaka has been one of the airline’s most requested international destinations.
“Zambia has long been on our radar, and Lusaka is a route our customers have been asking about. The Johannesburg–Lusaka corridor carries a significant mix of business and leisure travellers, as well as South Africans and Zambians travelling to see family and friends. We’re proud to bring our fares and our reliability to this route and to make the connection between our two countries more accessible than it has been.”
The launch strengthens travel links between South Africa and Zambia while offering more affordable options for regional travel.
Why Lusaka deserves a spot on your travel list
As Zambia’s capital, Lusaka has become one of Southern Africa’s fastest-growing cities. It blends culture, wildlife and business opportunities, making it an attractive destination for a variety of travellers.
Visitors can explore the contemporary arts scene at 37D Gallery, browse local crafts at Kabwata Cultural Village, or discover the country’s rich history at the Lusaka National Museum.
Nature lovers don’t have to venture far from the city. Chaminuka Lodge and Nature Reserve offers safari experiences with elephants, lions, giraffes and wildebeest, while Munda Wanga Environmental Park combines a botanical garden with a wildlife sanctuary.
The gateway to Zambia’s iconic safari destinations
For many travellers, Lusaka is the starting point for some of Africa’s most celebrated attractions.
The city provides convenient access to Livingstone and Victoria Falls, as well as the renowned Lower Zambezi National Park and South Luangwa National Park, both famous for exceptional safari experiences.
Lusaka is also an important commercial centre for Southern and Central Africa, with regional banks, mining companies, telecommunications firms and pan-African organisations contributing to its growing economy. South Africa remains one of Zambia’s key trade and investment partners, making the route valuable for business travellers as well.
Affordable regional travel remains the goal
FlySafair says the new route continues its strategy of making travel across Southern Africa more affordable.
“Our international network has been built on the principle that connecting South Africa with its neighbours should be affordable, not a luxury. When we launched Cape Town to Windhoek, we brought fares down significantly on that corridor, and we intend to do the same on Johannesburg to Lusaka. Zambia and South Africa have deep ties, and we’re glad to make staying connected a little easier.”
