The celebrated drummer and composer takes centre stage at Untitled Basement for an intimate evening of storytelling, collaboration and sonic exploration
Johannesburg’s cultural calendar is set for a standout evening this May as acclaimed drummer, composer and educator Sphelelo ‘Lelo’ Mazibuko presents Faces of Identity, a deeply personal live music experience at Untitled Basement in Brammfontein on 29 May 2026.
Blending live performance with reflective conversation, Faces of Identity promises an intimate and thought-provoking cultural experience that explores heritage, collaboration and the creative forces that shape artistic identity.
Inspired by FACES, Mazibuko’s acclaimed two-album debut project, the live showcase builds on the themes of lineage, memory and mentorship that have become central to his artistic voice. Released in 2025, FACES: The First Movement marked Mazibuko’s formal arrival as a bandleader, offering a rich meditation on intergenerational dialogue and the influential relationships that have shaped his career. He is currently developing the second instalment of the project, continuing his exploration of identity through sound and storytelling.

For this special Johannesburg performance, Mazibuko is joined by two of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary jazz artists, pianist and composer Thandi Ntuli and bassist-composer Benjamin Jephta.
Bound by years of creative exchange and friendship, the trio will revisit music from the formative stages of their careers while inviting audiences into honest and intimate conversations about their individual journeys, shared influences and evolving artistic identities.
More than a concert, Faces of Identity offers an immersive cultural experience where music meets conversation, reflection and connection – a rare opportunity to witness three exceptional artists unpack the stories behind their sound in real time.
