Experience the Thrill: Behind the Scenes of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” in South Africa

The cinematic world is abuzz with excitement as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning claims its spot as the tenth biggest box office hit of 2025. Premiering on Showmax on December 17 and airing on M-Net (DStv 101) on December 28, this film showcases exhilarating stunts, partially filmed in the breathtaking landscapes of South Africa.
The Plot Thickens
In this installment, audiences follow Ethan Hunt, portrayed by the iconic Tom Cruise, as he pursues a rogue AI system known as The Entity. This thrilling movie promises to deliver edge-of-your-seat action, but it’s the stunts that truly set it apart.
Death-Defying Stunts in Enchanting Locations
The film features a spectacular 15-minute biplane chase sequence that takes viewers through some of South Africa’s most stunning scenery:
- Blyde River Canyon: Serving as the backdrop for the opening flight.
- Drakensberg: The site for the mid-air plane-to-plane transfer and wing-walking.
- Wild Coast: The climactic scene features an intense cockpit fight.
Wade Eastwood, the Durban-born stunt coordinator, describes this aerial sequence as a blend of “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible,” showcasing the best of both worlds.
The Preparation
Before filming commenced, Tom Cruise and the stunt pilots trained rigorously at Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire to perfect their maneuvers using modified 1940s Stearman biplanes equipped for wing work. Once in South Africa, the team conducted approximately 4,000 flights to execute the intricate choreography involved in the stunts.
The Stunt Experience
Cruise shares his insights, stating, “I knew I could do loops and rolls… The only way you can do this is by building a programme that you move step by step through.” The physical demands of filming were immense; at over 60 years old, Cruise undertook extensive weight training and strict nutrition to meet the challenges ahead.
Wade Eastwood adds some perspective on the g-force and physical challenges faced during the filming. “Imagine putting your whole body out the window and pushing against hurricane force winds,” he explains, highlighting the sheer intensity of the stunts. The dangers were real, and Cruise was often seen slamming down onto the wing of the biplane, fighting for breath amidst the chaos.
Iconic Jumps and Record-Breaking Stunts
The film also features a breathtaking burning-parachute sequence. Filmed over the Drakensberg, Cruise leaps from a helicopter over two kilometers in the air. The special effects team ensured the main parachute soaked in fuel ignited mid-fall, creating a stunning visual spectacle as Hunt spirals down and deploys his reserve chute — showcasing unmatched bravery and cinematic genius.
That moment is now recognized by Guinness World Records for the “most burning parachute jumps by an individual,” a testament to the lengths the team went to deliver a thrilling experience.
A Film Worth Watching
As Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning continues to gather accolades, including awards for Best Action Movie and Best Actor: Action at the 2025 Critics’ Choice Super Awards, it stands as a shining example of what blockbuster entertainment should be. The New York Times aptly describes it as “blockbuster entertainment at its most highly polished.”
