Evita se Perron turns 30: Celebrating three decades of Darling charm

If the walls of Darling’s most famous former train station could talk, they would likely pour you a brandy and tell you to stop taking yourself so seriously. This year, Evita se Perron turns 30, marking three decades of defiance, decadence, and undeniable charm as one of South Africa’s cheekiest cultural landmarks.

From political satire to sweet reinvention

Once a dusty, abandoned train station where the ghosts of old journeys lingered, the site was transformed in 1996 by the nation’s satirical firebrand, Pieter-Dirk Uys. Armed with wit and lipstick, he created a space where art met politics and audiences met the razor-tongued Evita Bezuidenhout.

Thirty years later, the venue remains a pilgrimage site for lovers of theatre and history, but it has mastered the art of reinvention. Following a closure in 2020, the confectionery maestros from Darling Sweet and Swartland Kitchen stepped in to preserve the spirit of the Perron while infusing it with a delicious new twist.

A future filled with flavour

Today, the station that once rattled with political satire now hums with the scent of toffee, fudge, and freshly baked cookies. Visitors can explore the old ticket office, now a toffee tasting room, or visit the platform café, which has been converted into a world-first rusk and cookie tasting room.

Just in time for the major birthday bash in early 2026, Swartland Kitchen will take its final bow to re-emerge as the Evita se Perron Bakery. This evolution cements the marriage of theatre and toffee, ensuring that satire and sweetness continue to coexist.

A living museum of culture

Beyond the baked goods, the venue remains a living museum of South Africa’s cultural contradictions. The Museum Nauseam continues to stop visitors in their tracks with haunting apartheid-era relics, reminding us that humour and history often share the same uncomfortable stage.

The spirit of the place remains delightfully irreverent. It is one of the few places where you can sip coffee under a portrait of Tannie Evita, nibble on an almond and orange flavoured rusk, and wander through an exhibition that skewers politicians and celebrates democracy—all before lunch.

Join the birthday bash

As the venue celebrates this milestone, the message is clear: you cannot keep a great satirical icon down. Expect a year-long celebration packed with events, tastings, and nostalgic nods to Uys’s trailblazing work.
