Durban: The Gateway of International Travel in South Africa

Durban: The Gateway of International Travel in South Africa

Known for its sunny beaches and warm hospitality, Durban is fast becoming a pivotal player in global travel and trade. The city’s location, well-developed infrastructure, and its status as an economic and tourism hub have contributed to international traffic growing by 2.6% year-on-year. This strong passenger demand and an increasing appetite for international connectivity mark Durban as a gateway for business and international travel.

Durbanites are Going Global

Global airline Emirates indicates that the top destinations from Durban include Dubai, followed by London, Medina, Mumbai, and Istanbul. These destinations paint a diverse picture, ranging from business and religious travel hubs to vibrant leisure hotspots, highlighting Durban’s versatility as a launchpad for various travel needs.

Emirates has noted a strong year-on-year growth on popular routes from Durban, reflecting evolving travel patterns and increased global mobility. Repeat travellers constitute 65% of Emirates’ passengers originating from Durban, compared to a still-impressive 55% national average. These percentages demonstrate the loyalty travellers have for the Emirates experience.

Direct Bookings on the Rise

Durban travellers are driven by convenience and technology, with Emirates recording a double-digit year-on-year increase in website bookings from the region compared to the previous year, signalling customers’ growing confidence in online self-service channels.

Notable Seasonal Trends

During the June to August travel season, Durban experiences a surge in outbound travel to leisure destinations like Dubai, London, Istanbul, Dublin, Lisbon, and Amsterdam. Visiting friends and relatives’ traffic spikes to cities such as London, Dhaka, Mumbai, Lahore, and Amsterdam, aligning with school holidays and seasonal reunions.

Meanwhile, travel from Durban to Dubai peaks in December and January, corresponding with South Africa’s fourth term school break. Emirates data reveals that over 60% of Durban-based families stay in Dubai for 7 to 14 days, with most choosing Economy Class for its outstanding amenities.

Whether for sun-soaked holidays, family reunions, religious pilgrimages, or business engagements, Durbanites are traveling more, and they trust Emirates as a partner. As the world grows more connected and South Africans increasingly look beyond borders for travel and commerce, Durban is not just keeping up but leading the way.
