Formula 1 fans across South Africa had the rare opportunity to meet one of the sport’s current stars when Atlassian Williams F1 Team driver Alex Albon visited the country following a month-long nationwide roadshow.
In partnership with Super Group brands Betway and Jackpot City, Williams took Formula 1 directly to fans in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, where thousands experienced the team’s FW48 show car up close and entered competitions to win VIP experiences with Albon.
A Historic Return for Williams
Albon’s visit marked the first official return of an active Williams Formula 1 driver to South Africa since Alain Prost claimed victory at the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
More than three decades later, the visit celebrated Williams’ long-standing connection with South African motorsport while highlighting the country’s enduring passion for Formula 1 ahead of the team’s 50th anniversary in 2027.
Bringing Formula 1 Beyond the Circuit
With only around 1% of Formula 1 fans worldwide expected to attend a Grand Prix during their lifetime, Williams has focused on bringing the sport closer to supporters through global fan experiences.
The South African roadshow formed part of that strategy, following successful Williams Fan Zones in cities such as Melbourne, Austin and Las Vegas that have attracted more than 340,000 visitors over the past two years.
Alex Albon Praises South African Fans
Reflecting on the trip, Albon described South Africa as a country he had always wanted to visit and praised the passion shown by local Formula 1 supporters.
He also expressed his hope of one day seeing Formula 1 return to Africa, saying he would love the opportunity to race on the continent in the future.
Formula 1’s Popularity Continues to Grow
Super Group CEO Neal Menashe said the nationwide activation demonstrated the incredible enthusiasm South Africans have for Formula 1.
He added that Albon’s appearance gave fans a memorable opportunity to connect with the sport in a way few have experienced before.
South Africa’s Formula 1 Passion Remains Strong
Although South Africa has not hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1993, Alex Albon’s visit once again highlighted the country’s deep connection to the sport.
For local fans, it was more than a driver appearance — it was another reminder of the appetite for Formula 1 in South Africa and the ongoing hope that Grand Prix racing will one day return to African soil.
