The Automobile Association is offering free armed response for women in South Africa through the MyAA app as part of a new national safety initiative

South Africa’s ongoing crisis of violence against women has prompted a new safety initiative from the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), which has announced free armed response for all women in South Africa for a period of 30 days.

The initiative gives women access to a virtual panic button through the MyAA app, allowing them to request emergency armed response anywhere in the country at no cost during the activation period.

A response to South Africa’s safety crisis

The announcement comes amid renewed public concern over violence against women following several high-profile killings that have shaken communities across the country.

The AA says the decision reflects its broader commitment to safe mobility, extending beyond road safety to personal security for women walking, exercising or travelling.

“Our bodies are not disposable, and coming home should never be a privilege.”

The organisation believes partnerships between the public and private sectors are essential in finding practical solutions that improve everyday safety.

How the free armed response service works

The free armed response service is available to women across South Africa for 30 days from registration.

The AA has confirmed there are:

• No hidden fees

• No automatic paid subscription after the 30-day period

• No obligation to continue once the free period ends

After registering, users simply download the MyAA app, where their smartphone becomes a virtual panic button that can summon emergency armed response through the AA’s network of security partners nationwide.

The AA calls on corporates to take action

Bobby Ramagwede, CEO of the Automobile Association, said the initiative is about taking meaningful action during a difficult period for South African women.

“This is the AA putting its hand up and saying to the women of South Africa: we see you, we hear you, and we want to help.”

He also encouraged businesses to support similar safety initiatives for employees and families, noting that violence against women requires long-term, collective action rather than short-term solutions.

Ramagwede described the free service as an immediate intervention while broader efforts continue to address South Africa’s wider crime challenges.
