Avoid these winter bulking mistakes and maximise muscle growth this season
Winter is officially bulking season, and for many gym-goers, that means heavier weights, bigger meals and a renewed focus on building lean muscle.
But despite eating more and training harder, many people find themselves disappointed when spring arrives. Instead of noticeable muscle gains, they’ve added unwanted body fat or made little progress at all.
If your winter bulk isn’t delivering results, you may be making one of these common mistakes.
1. You’re Eating More Calories, But Not Enough Protein
Simply increasing your food intake isn’t enough to build muscle.
Without sufficient protein, your body doesn’t have the building blocks needed for muscle growth, regardless of how many calories you consume.
Aim for around 1.6g of protein per kilogram of body weight each day and prioritise reaching that target consistently. Calories support growth, but protein is what drives muscle development.
2. You’re Skipping Your Most Important Meals
Breakfast and your post-workout meal are often the first to suffer when life gets busy.
Preparing high-protein meals first thing in the morning or after training isn’t always practical, so having quick options available makes staying consistent much easier.
The Bix Build
342 calories | 31g protein
Ingredients
- 2 Weetbix
- 200ml unsweetened almond milk
- 1 serving caramel protein powder
- 15g low-fat caramel yoghurt
- Crushed caramel chocolate for topping
Method
Mix the Weetbix, almond milk and protein powder together. Add the yoghurt on top and finish with your preferred caramel chocolate topping.
3. Dirty Bulking Isn’t the Shortcut You Think It Is
Eating everything in sight doesn’t automatically lead to better muscle gains.
A large calorie surplus often results in unnecessary fat gain, making your future cutting phase much harder.
Instead, calculate your maintenance calories and add approximately 300 to 500 calories per day. This controlled surplus supports muscle growth while limiting excess fat.
4. You’re Neglecting Nutrition on Rest Days
Muscle isn’t built while you’re training — it grows while you recover.
That means your nutrition should remain a priority, even on days away from the gym.
Keep your protein intake consistent and reduce calories only slightly, ideally no more than 200 calories below your training-day intake.
Salted Chocolate Brownie Bites
Makes 10 bites | 53 calories each | 4g protein each
Ingredients
- 1 scoop double chocolate protein powder
- 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp honey
- 30g sugar-free dark chocolate, melted
Method
Mix all ingredients except the melted chocolate into a thick dough, adding a little water if necessary. Roll into bite-sized balls, coat with melted chocolate, sprinkle with sea salt and refrigerate for one hour.
5. You’re Still Following Your Summer Workout Programme
Training for a calorie deficit and training for muscle growth are not the same.
During a bulk, your programme should focus on progressive overload and compound exercises such as:
- Squats
- Deadlifts
- Bench press
- Overhead press
- Rows
Gradually increase your training volume while reducing unnecessary cardio to maximise muscle-building potential.
6. You’re Not Consistently Reaching Your Daily Protein Goal
Meeting your protein target through whole foods alone can be difficult every single day.
High-quality protein supplements or mass gainers can help fill nutritional gaps when full meals aren’t possible, but they should complement — not replace — a balanced diet.
Easy Oreo Dirt
330 calories | 24g protein
Ingredients
- 100g fat-free yoghurt
- 2 crushed Oreo biscuits
- 5g black cocoa powder
- 1 scoop chocolate biscuit protein powder
Method
Combine the dry ingredients, adding a small splash of water if needed. Stir through the yoghurt and crushed Oreos until well combined.
7. You’re Not Tracking Your Progress
Guesswork rarely produces consistent results.
You don’t need to track every calorie forever, but monitoring your food intake for a couple of weeks can reveal whether you’re actually eating enough protein and calories to support muscle growth.
Many people who believe they’re bulking successfully are unintentionally falling well short of their nutrition goals.

Make This Winter Bulk Count
Winter offers a valuable opportunity to build lean muscle before cutting season returns.
By focusing on quality nutrition, progressive strength training, adequate recovery and consistent protein intake, you’ll be far more likely to see meaningful results when the warmer months arrive.
Rather than trying to fix everything at once, start by addressing one mistake at a time. Small improvements made consistently throughout winter can lead to significantly better muscle gains by spring.
