South Africa’s prestigious wine celebration invites nominations for industry leaders, innovators and changemakers

The search for South Africa’s next wine industry trailblazers has officially begun.

Nominations are now open for the 2027 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event Honours, inviting the wine community to recognise individuals whose leadership, innovation and dedication continue to shape one of the country’s most celebrated industries.

Industry professionals, organisations and anyone involved in South African wine are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates before the closing date of 3 August 2026.

Honouring South Africa’s Wine Heritage

For decades, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event has celebrated the people behind South Africa’s thriving wine industry while marking the beginning of each new harvest season.

The annual event also commemorates a defining moment in South African history. On 2 February 1659, the country’s first wine made from Cape grapes was recorded with the famous words:

“Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.”

Today, the event continues to honour the heritage, craftsmanship and global reputation of South African wine while recognising those driving the industry into the future.

Award Categories for 2027

Nominations are welcomed across five prestigious categories:

1659 Award for Visionary Leadership – recognising individuals whose lasting impact has shaped the industry.
Viti- and Viniculture Award – celebrating innovation in grape growing and winemaking.
Wine Advancement Award – honouring those promoting the image and responsible enjoyment of South African wine.
Growing Inclusivity Award – recognising efforts to build a more diverse and inclusive wine industry.
Wine Agri-Worker Award – celebrating the vital role of agricultural workers in sustaining the sector.

A Legacy of Exceptional Honourees

Over the years, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event has recognised some of South Africa’s most respected contributors, including Nelson Mandela, Norma Ratcliffe, Unsung Wine Workers and numerous pioneers who have left an enduring legacy.

The 2026 honourees included the Retief family of Van Loveren, Denzel Swarts, Pieter Ferreira, Charl Theron and Wilfred Fortuin, celebrating excellence across every level of the industry.

How to Submit a Nomination

Nominations can be submitted by completing the official nomination form available on the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event website.

The deadline for entries is 3 August 2026.

Successful honourees will be selected by an independent judging panel and announced during the 2027 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event on Thursday, 4 February 2027, at Groot Constantia.
